Our client is a global SI who require an experienced Software Engineer Lead to join an existing programme on a long-term contract.

START: ASAP
DURATION: INITIALLY JANUARY 2025
RATE: £625 (OUTSIDE IR35)
LOCATION: ALDERSHOT

The product family is well established and the majority of development work on the account is in the form of incremental change to mature software components.

The Software Engineering Lead (SEL) works collaboratively with, and takes direction from, the Software Engineering Team Lead (SETL) to manage the Software Team backlog. This includes preparing backlog items such that they are ready for selection and inclusion in team Sprint Backlogs and ensuring that all tasks agreed for inclusion within a specific Sprint Backlog are progressed.

As members of the Design Office, SELs work with the Product Design Authority to ensure that the technical solution / design implemented for the project aligns with the overall product technical direction, and with the Compliance Verification Engineer to ensure that all changes are implemented in accordance with a Quality Management System. The SEL also seeks to apply appropriate tools and methods to increase productivity and accuracy.

The SEL is responsible for:
* Identification of tasks within the overall Team Backlog that can be included in specific Sprint Backlogs and delivery of those tasks in accordance with the defined acceptance criteria and in compliance with policies and procedures.
* Working with the Project Technical Authorities to ensure that the scope of work, estimated effort level, required completion dates, and acceptance criteria associated with each backlog task are fully understood.
* Working with the Software Engineering Team to ensure that all Sprint Backlog tasks are completed within the assigned sprint.
* Acting as Scrum Master for one or more Software Engineering Teams.
* Addressing sprint task blockers where possible and escalating those that cannot be resolved within the Software Engineering Team in a timely manner.
* Coordinating activities with the System Team Lead and Operational Subject Matter Experts where backlog tasks require support from members of other delivery teams.
* Coordinating tasks with Support Functions as necessary to ensure completion of sprint tasks.
* Leading Sprint Planning and Retrospective meetings and ensuring that any lessons learned are both communicated and acted upon.
* Maintaining a sprint progress chart and providing progress reports to PMs both at the end of a Sprint and when requested

A successful candidate will have:
* Experience of working in, and leading, all aspects of the software lifecycle.
* Experience of working in an Agile development environment using both Scrum and Kanban
* The ability to provide reasoned detailed estimates with corresponding assessments of dependencies, assumptions and risks
* Experience of both functional and Object Oriented (OO) Design engineering
* The ability to conduct design, code and unit test inspections, reviews, and walkthroughs.

A successful candidate will ideally have:
* Experience of the design and development of software in compliance with Software Safety and Security Standards
* Experience of the design and development of software for use on ground based equipment in compliance with Military Aviation Authority Regulatory Articles.
* An understanding of system level architecture as well as detailed knowledge of multi-threading, inter-process communication, memory management and cross platform development.
* Knowledge of development in C/C++ on Linux.
* Experience of tools such as Sparx Enterprise Architect, Rational ClearCase and ClearQuest, DOORS and HP ALM
* Experience of service oriented or distributed systems
* Experience working with Geospatial Information Systems
